How to Connect to the Internet Without VZAccess Manager on a Mac

So you have Verizon Wireless 3G internet and you want to connect without the annoying VZAccess Manager? Here's how. (I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11.)

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Network.
  3. Click New Location... from the Location dropdown.
  4. Give it a name (I, in honor of Bullets' sailboat studio, chose "On Faith").
  5. Click OK.
  6. (Now you are back at the Network window.)
  7. From the Show dropdown, choose your Verizon high-speed device (mine says PANTECH USB MODEM).
  8. Click Configure.
  9. (Now you are under the PPP tab.)
  10. For Account Name use XXXXXXXXXX@vzw3g.com (where XXXXXXXXXX is the phone number for your device).
  11. For Password use VZW.
  12. For Telephone Number use #777.
  13. If you prefer, click PPP Options, check Connect automatically when needed and click OK.
  14. Click the Modem tab.
  15. From the Modem dropdown, choose your device (Verizon Support (PC 5220) worked for me).
  16. Check Show modem status in the menu bar.
  17. Click the PPP tab.
  18. Click Apply Now and Dial Now....
  19. Cross your fingers.

Does this work for you? Please discuss in the Comments.

Only drawback is VZAccess Manager has this nice "Usage" feature which shows how much data you have used of your 5 gigabyte limit. Does anyone know how to get usage information without VZAccess Manager? Please comment.

In Leopard, there is no field to enter the phone number (#777). As such, I can't figure out how to complete this.
